Blood:  He sat patiently as she carefully and gently wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, pleased that this was the extent of his injuries.  Their eyes met and held as she performed this simple task for him.  His hand closed over hers when she finished.  He drew her closer and brushed his lips over hers.  "Thank you, Kitty."

Passion:  She writhed on the bed as his hands stroked her body into a heady state of arousal.  She was so lost in the passion his touch invoked, that she almost missed his whispered, "I love you, Kitty…"  That was all she needed to push her over the edge and she cried out his name in ecstasy as she was consumed with her release.

Why?:  She understood why he wouldn't or couldn't commit to her... yet as he held her in his arms, in the bed they shared in her room over the Long Branch, after making passionate love to her, Kitty knew that Matt was as committed to her as he could ever possibly be… and in those moments, the whys just did not matter.

Ring:  He watched her walk out of his office, knowing he hadn't given her the answer she sought.  More than anything in the world, he wanted her to be happy.  And if that meant she found her happiness elsewhere… His hand closed around the gold ring in his pocket.  The ring he'd purchased nearly twenty years ago when he first realized that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.  The ring he knew he could never give to her as long as he continued to wear that tin badge of his.  The scales were unbalanced for him too… gold versus tin…

Gift:  As she stood in the doorway, watching him ride out of town yet again, she pulled the shawl tighter around her shoulders.  The shawl, a gift Matt had given her several years ago.  A little something to take the place of his arms when he couldn't be there to hold her himself, he'd told her as he wrapped it around her that first time.  She tugged the wrap a little tighter again.  It would do… barely… but it would do until he returned once more.

Alone:  He stood in the window of the doctor's office and watched her… watched his life… climb into the stage heading out of Dodge.  He laid his hand on his chest, over his heart, as he felt it ache with a pain even more intense than the nearby bullet wound that had sent her running.  And for the first time he could ever remember, he felt truly alone.

Destiny:  As they stood together with their hands clasped, before their friends and the preacher, finally declaring their love and commitment to each other for all to see; they knew that this moment was simply destiny fulfilling the promise she'd made to them when they first met so many years before.

Follow:  The old man sat in silence as he wiped the damp cloth over her fevered brow, doing his best to stave off the inevitable even though he knew it was pointless.  He'd already lost one, and the loss weighed heavily on the shoulders of the old healer.  For as certain as he was that he could heal her physical injuries and save her life, he also knew that no matter what he did, she would follow her heart into the next life.  Kitty had told him once before… she couldn't live without Matt.

Haunted:  She'd haunted his dreams from the first moment he'd seen her in the café just six months earlier.  And as he got to know her better, Matt knew that it wouldn't be long before he had to do something about that fiery red-head that had worked her way under his skin and into his heart without even trying.

Eternal:  Everyone thought it was the badge that would have a hold on him forever.  They were wrong.  She was the one with an eternal hold on him… on his heart and on his soul. Without her, the badge he wore and swore such duty to, would mean nothing.
